# Get started checklist

> The six setup steps the desk walks you through after setup, and how each one ticks itself off.

Right after you create the owner account, the desk opens on **Get started** at `/welcome`. It shows one step at a time, with **Back**, **Skip** and **Next**, a progress ring ("2 of 6 done") and the list of steps under the card.

Every step is worked out from what's actually set up, not from what you clicked. Doing the same thing in **Settings**, on the **Knowledge** page or with the `jun` CLI ticks it off too. The page refreshes every few seconds, so a crawl or a first install that finishes in the background shows up on its own.

## The steps

| # | Step | Ticks off when | Optional |
| - | - | - | - |
| 1 | **Create your account** | Always done: you're signed in with a passkey. | |
| 2 | **Add your docs** | At least one knowledge source has finished indexing. | |
| 3 | **Set up the AI assistant** | The AI is turned on. | |
| 4 | **Make the widget yours** | The widget has a brand colour, a logo (light or dark) or a greeting. | Yes |
| 5 | **Put it on your site** | The loader has run on a site other than the desk, or you pressed **I've added it**. | |
| 6 | **Invite your team** | The workspace has a second member or any invite. | Yes |

`/welcome` opens on the first step that isn't done. Each step has its own address (`/welcome/knowledge`, `/welcome/ai` and so on), so ticking one off doesn't jump the page ahead while you read.

### 1. Create your account

Done by the time you see the page. It reminds you to keep your setup token safe: it's how you get back in if you lose every passkey. See [First sign-in](/deploy/first-sign-in).

### 2. Add your docs

Paste your help center or docs site URL and press **Add website**. The desk reads its sitemap, crawls the pages in the background and re-syncs daily. Crawling takes a minute or two; the step ticks off once pages are indexed.

Files (PDF, DOCX, Markdown, text) and snippets are on the **Knowledge** page. See [Knowledge](/ai/knowledge).

### 3. Set up the AI assistant

Choose where replies come from, then press **Turn on the AI**:

* **Workers AI**: built in, runs on your Cloudflare account, no key needed.
* **OpenAI**: your own API key. Add it as the `OPENAI_API_KEY` secret (in Cloudflare, open the Worker → **Settings** → **Variables and Secrets**, or run `npx wrangler secret put OPENAI_API_KEY`), then reload the page.
* **ChatGPT sign-in**: replies use your own ChatGPT plan. It's listed first and preselected while it's offered, and signing in turns the AI on without a second click.

<Warning>
  ChatGPT sign-in is only for a private desk you use yourself. OpenAI's terms cover plan usage for your own use, not a desk answering the public. Use Workers AI or an OpenAI API key for a desk your customers talk to.
</Warning>

Once it's on, the step shows the provider and model, with a **Change** link. The model, the monthly reply cap and per-task models are in **Settings → AI**. See [Models](/ai/models).

### 4. Make the widget yours

Pick a colour and press **Use this colour**. Logo, greeting, mode and the chat window's side are on the **Chat widget** page; business hours are in **Settings → Inbox**. See [Appearance](/widget/appearance).

### 5. Put it on your site

The step shows your snippet with a **Copy** button:

```html theme={null}
<script src="https://your-desk.example.com/widget.js" data-key="wk_…" defer></script>
```

Put it in your site's `<head>`, before your own scripts. The step ticks itself off the first time the loader connects from an origin other than the desk itself, and then shows "Seen on `https://…`". The desk's own demo page doesn't count.

If your site is a staging site, or nobody has loaded it yet, press **I've added it**. That marks the step done and moves to the next one. The **demo page** link opens `/demo.html?key=wk_…` on your desk so you can try the widget straight away.

Allowed websites and identity settings are on the **Chat widget → Behaviour** tab. See [Install the widget](/widget/install).

### 6. Invite your team

Press **Create an invite link**. You get a link to send to one teammate; it works once, for 7 days, and makes them an agent. To invite an admin, or to manage people and roles, use **Settings → Team**. See [Team](/inbox/team).

The last step's button is **Go to the inbox**.

## Leaving and coming back

Leaving Get started never hides it. The link under the steps says **Go to the inbox, finish later from the sidebar** (or **All set, go to the inbox** when everything is done).

Until every step is done, owners and admins see a **Getting started** card at the bottom of the sidebar:

* the percentage done,
* each step with a blue tick when done, or a ring of dots while it's open,
* a tile for the next open step, such as **Add your docs** or **Copy the snippet**,
* an **×** to hide the card.

Click a step to open its page. With the sidebar collapsed, the card becomes a **Get started** icon with "Get started (N of 6)" as its tooltip.

The **×** hides the card for the whole workspace, for good. You can still open Get started at `/welcome`. Agents never see the card.
